Course Overview
As Chinese medicine practitioners, we often pride ourselves with being part of an ancient tradition. However, the contribution and relevance of our medicine in modern times, does not only stem from its antiquity, but also from its ability to continuously develop, re-evaluate and adapt to changing times and circumstances.
This is the essence of medicine as a living tradition. We belong to a tradition of medicine that acknowledges that the ancient classics possess insights into the body’s intrinsic healing mechanisms and are therefore to be studied and examined. However, it also acknowledges that ancient texts should not be used as an excuse to freeze in time. These texts are a necessary base for assimilating our own social, cultural and scientific concepts, allowing us to enhance further our ability to heal.
In this course, you will follow the remarkable historical journey of the ancient medical text Shanghan Lun. We will discuss the changes in its perception through time, place and individual physicians, all of which influenced its interpretations and clinical applications. We will analyse five prominent formulas and discuss their practical uses, based on the concept behind the common phrase “grasp the mechanism of disease to flexibly apply the formulas”.
- Understand how historical circumstances have moulded our perception of theoretical concepts.
- Realize the clinical potential and practical uses of the following 5 formulas:
- Gui Zhi Tang
- Tao He Cheng Qi Tang
- Zhi Zi Chi Tang
- Xiao Chai Hu Tang
- Gan Cao Xie Xin Tang
