Taking this course, you will

  • Explore the essential body of acupuncture knowledge found in rhymed odes and songs. See how these verses help practitioners memorize important points and techniques.
  • Analyze historical agreements on acupuncture points that impact various body regions, focusing on five major poems from the Ming Dynasty.
  • Examine Ma Danyang’s Twelve Heavenly Star Points Song in-depth. Compare four versions and understand the indications for each one.
  • Compare point indications in five famous odes across clinical areas (e.g., head, neck, ear, digestion, gynecology). This will give you a traditional perspective on point selection.
  • Learn how rhyme and structure aid in memorization. Apply this with examples from essential categories, such as the 15 Luo points, 16 Xi-Cleft points, 8 Influential points, He-Sea points, and Yuan-Source points.

Course Overview

Using rhymed verses to aid memorization began in the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD/CE) and peaked during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 AD/CE). These poetic works encoded essential information about acupuncture points, needling techniques, and points for various symptoms and conditions, forming a cornerstone of classical Chinese medicine education.

This course covers the most famous odes and songs from the Ming Dynasty and includes some modern compositions that echo the same themes. Key texts include four versions of Ma Danyang’s Twelve Heavenly Star Points Song, with an exploration of their ongoing significance and clinical relevance. You will also compare acupuncture points by region across five classical poems, gaining insight into both historical point indications and those that remain applicable in modern practice.
